A fabulous day to run cross country:  blue skies, wispy white clouds, warm sun, mild cooling breeze.

In the Women's Varsity race, URI's Kristen Coon sprinted to a 10 yard lead early, and led through the mile, with Marisa Clapp (Murdock High '00)  and Aly Venti in the chase pack.  Marisa led at two, followed closely by Coon and Venti.  Clapp and Venti separated from the pack and, with 200 yards to go, Clapp had 25 yards on Venti and looked like the eventual winner.  However, Venti crept closer and, with a mere 20 yards to go, closed the remaining 5 yard gap to pull even and squeeze by  Clapp to win by a step as Clapp collapsed across the finish line.

Former Central Mass High Schoolers we found in the results:

  • Marissa Clapp ( Murdock '00 and Springfield '04 ) College All American 2x
  • Caitlin Clark ( St Peter Marian '02 and Assumption '06 ) 4x T&G All Star, CM D1 XC Champ '01
  • Amanda Dahlberg ( Gardner '01 and U Mass Amherst '05 ) Distance
  • Julie Durkin ( North Middlesex '01 and Assumption '05 )
  • Jenny Farrell ( Algonquin '02 and Bentley '06 ) "4x T&G All Star, 2nd CM D1 XC, 20th State XC '01"
  • Jessica Iannacci ( Lunenburg '02 and Boston U '06 ) "2x T&G All Star, 2nd CM D2 XC '01 and 2nd State D2 XC '01" and BU's top finisher.

  • Cara Valeri ( Wachusett '02 and Boston College '06 ) "4x T&G All Star, 3rd D1 CM XC '01"
  • Rachel Whitney ( Littleton '00 and Assumption '04 )

Brown took team honors with 105 points, followed by Trinity and Middlebury with 130.  The world's coolest college, Smith College, placed 34th overall.  Oh well.

In the Men's Varsity race, Pat Moulton did the pace-setting work through most of the race, followed by teammate Dylan Wykes and Brown's Pat Tarpy.  At three, Tarpy looked like death warmed over, but kept churning.  Tarpy took over while climbing through the hill for the second time and opened up enough lead to hold off the late charges of Wykes and Moulton.

Top Central Mass finisher was the constantly improving, Auburn HS grad, Mario Fraioli, who ran with the chase pack for most of the race.  Tim Curran, former Central Mass HS XC champ, came home 11th overall and 4th man for the very strong PC team.

PC topped the team race with a low of 40 points, followed by Brown with 59, BC with 127 and Stonehill at 202.
