From the Harvard Web site, comes this infobit about the Gordon Track: It was built in 1977 at a cost of $4 million. The architects were The Architects Collaborative, Inc.; the contractor was Turner Construction Company of Boston. The facility was designed by Thomas A. McMahon, Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Mechanics and Professor of Biology, and Peter Greene, a postgraduate student in applied physics. After extensive research, they discovered that a more resilient surface would reduce injuries--the primary goal--and increase speeds. Their article "Fast Running Track" made the cover of Scientific American in December, 1978.

Jill Croft (UMass Lowell and Gardner HS), ran 7.75 in the prelins of the 60 meter dash, 7.70 in the semis to qualify for the finals, but did not show up in the finals results.  Geraldine Pillay took 1st in 7.38.  Jill also cleared 1.59m  or 5'02.50" in the high jump, good for 8th place.  Kristy Laramee topped the field with 5'08.5"  Jill completed a busy day sailing 18'03.00",  5.56m in the long jump prelims, the 4th longest distance.
