The Big East XC championships were conducted in cool temps, under clouded
skies. Adam Sutton of Providence blew out to a 50 yard lead in the first
mile, and just kept stretching his lead to the end. A pack of 10 from Villanova,
Georgetown, and Providence followed Sutton through miles 2, 3, and
4. Providence was well-placed, and it looked like a repeat of the
New Englands from several weeks ago, in which Providence dominated.
However, the pack disintegrated by mile marker 4, and Villanova emerged with
2-3-4, which they held to the end. Villanova took team honors,
followed by Providence and Georgetown.
Wachusett HS grad and Georgetown Senior Mike Smith
ran with the lead pack through the breakup, and finished a gutsy 7th overall,
2nd for Georgetown. Former St. John's Prep grad and current
Providence senior (actually graduated HS a year behind Smith) Tim
Curran placed 35th and non-scoring for Providence. Dave
Hughson, North Middlesex sub 2:00 HS 800 man, now a Freshman at UConn,
placed 113rd overall. Joel Legare,
Wachusett HS grad and U Conn sophomore, finished 114th overall. Dave and
Joel were 6 & 7 for U Conn, which was 14th in the team competition.

The women's competition featured no run-away leaders, until the last 300
yards. Rather, a pack of 10 ran together through miles 1, 2, and into
3, after which ND's Lauren King unloaded a long kick to win it all. Julie
Spolidoro (Duxbury HS, Boston College) ran just behind the lead pack,
then held on for 10th overall, #2 for BC. BC ran without New Jersey's
Guiney sisters and without Laura Smith (Wachusett
HS). Cara Valeri (Wachusett HS '02) was BC's
non-scoring 7th man, placing 89th overall Notre Dame took team honors,
followed by Georgetown, Villanova, Providence, and BC.
