Where did those Central Mass High Schoolers go?

Cardinal Qualifier

Stanford University, CA
May 13, 2000

Jonathon Riley, Brookline HS and Stanford, placed fifth in the 1,500 meters in 3:42.5. an NCAA provisional qualifying time.  Gabe Jennings of Stanford was first in 3:38.7 (equivalent to about 3:55+) for an automatic qualifier. Jonathon, of course, was the Massachusetts High School XC, mile, 800, and whatever-else champ, as well as the National HS indoor 2-mile and 1 mile champ (what a day!). Jonathon is forecast as the #2 finisher in the upcoming NCAAs.

Andy Powell, Oliver Ames HS and Stanford, placed seventh in the same 1500 meters, in 3:43.1.  Andy, you may recall, ran 4:10 for the indoor mile as a high school Sophomore (as a SOPHOMORE!).  Andy went on to win the Mass state HS mile and XC titles, as well as the national 2-mile. But, the smoothest high school runner ever to be seen in these parts, didn't quite slip under the magic 4:00 barrier as a high schooler. He did, however, earn a 4 year ride at Stanford.
