The men's cross country team finished sixth of six teams at the Papa's Pizza Invitational September 4, 1999 in Cullowhee. Rob Ball was the top finisher for UNCG, coming in 16th at 27:01. Nine of the 17 runners who competed at the Winthrop Cross Country Invitational September 18 ran their fastest times ever. The men's team finished seventh of 13 teams and beat two Southern Conference rivals, while the women's team finished seventh of 14 teams and beat four league foes.
"After looking at previous year's races, I'd say without a doubt this was the most successful meet this school has ever had," said coach Dan Dachelet. "The beauty of this is that there are still some significant areas where the team can improve. This just shows us that we can run with many of the schools in the conference."
In the 8K men's race, the Spartans finished behind Furman, Davidson and VMI and beat Charleston and Wofford. Wake Forest won the race.
Rob Ball led the squad in 25th place (26:20), followed by Jamie Bedard in 30th (26:35), David Jordan in 35th (26:52), Leonard Mitchell in 49th (27:33) and Steve Bayley in 60th (28:23).
