University Park, Pa., Sept. 18, 1999-- The Penn State Men's Cross Country team kicked off their 1999 season with a sixth place finish in the 21st annual Spiked Shoe Invitational Saturday. A crowd of about 200 people came out to the 8,000 meter Blue Course on a warm and pleasant day to see a strong field of 22 collegiate teams compete. James Madison, the tenth ranked team in the country, took the team title followed by Georgetown, Michigan, Bucknell, Malone and Penn State respectively, in a quality field of several highly ranked teams.
"You have to give JMU credit, they stayed at school all summer and ran in the mountains," Said Penn State head coach Harry Groves. "We've got a ways to go, but we got beat by five quality teams today.
