STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal men's distance crew posted some impressive times at the Iowa State Track and Field Classic in Ames, Iowa Saturday. Michael Stember and Jonathan Riley both broke four minutes and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships by going one-two in the mile. Riley graduated from Brookline HS in 1997. He motored to the Mass State Mile championships in 1996, then took the 800 Meter Championships at Shrewsbury HS in June 1997, along with a pile of other distance championships.

UML WOMEN WIN BRANDEIS INVITE; MEN FINISH 9TH
Jill Croft (Gardiner, Mass.) won the high jump with a jump of 1.70m. Teammate Erica Towlson (Winthrop, Mass.) finished second with a jump of 1.63 m. In the long jump the two teammates switched places as Towlson won and Croft finished second. Towlson also won the 55 meter high hurdles. Melissa Sullivan (Peabody, Mass) won the 600 meter run. Tara Fay (Westborough, Mass. ) won the shot.
The River Hawks finished strong in the jumping events as they won the Brandeis Invitational.Jill Croft graduated from Gardner HS in 1998 and took most Central Mass HS sprint and long jump championships.

The University of New Hampshire men's track team took second in a four team home meet held on January 30. UNH's middle distance runners had a big day taking first place in three events. Junior Kevin Horgan (Ashburnham, Mass.) led the way in the 1,000 meter run, junior Kyle Schneck (Concord, N.H.) took first in the 1,500 meter and Ryan Raymond (Loudon, N.H.) was fastest in the 3,000 meter.
The University of New Hampshire men's indoor track team placed fourth in a meet held at Rhode Island on February 6. UNH took first place in two events with junior Kevin Horgan (Ashburnham, Mass.) winning the 3000 meter run and junior Kyle Schneck (Concord, N.H.) taking the top spot in the 800 meter run. Other top performances by the Wildcats included junior Andrew Thompson (Freedom, N.H.) second in the weight throw, freshman Tim Constant (Alexandria, N.H.) second in the long jump, and junior Keith Chisholm (Hudson, N.H.) third in both the 55 and 200 meter dashes.

The UMass (Amherst) men's track and field team placed first at a quad-meet hosted by the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. on Saturday, January 30. The Minutemen finished with 81 points, ahead of New Hampshire (68), Holy Cross (21), and Central Connecticut State University (15). The win improves the team's record to 9-0.
The Minutemen placed a student-athlete amongst the top two finishers in 13 of 19 events. Freshman Wes Shaw (Auburn, Mass.) and St Johns Prep (Shrewsbury) class of '98, won the high jump (6' 04.00") and placed second in the pole vault (14'). Senior Tom Toye (Scarborough, Maine) finished first in the 200 meters (22.84), while sophomore Marc Sylvander (Chicopee, Mass.) won the 400 meters (51.22). Senior Dan LeBoeuf (Tewksbury, Mass.) placed first in the 800 meters (1:57.48).
Wes Shaw graduated from St John's Prep in 1998 and dominated pole vault competitions statewide.
