Where did those Central Mass High Schoolers go?

Pre-NCAA XC

Saturday, October 16, 1999
Indiana University
Riley, Powell

So, who's going to win the NCAA XC championships for 1999?  Who cares!  What is interesting is how the old Massachusetts High Schoolers did in this college meet.

Jonathon Riley (Eastern Mass' Brookline High 96, Mass State XC champ, Mass State Mile champ, Mass state 880 champ, etc)  and Stanford University  Junior) placed third in the  men's 'A' Race, over 8000 meters in 24:10.31. Riley was first man for Stanford, which took first place in the meet.

Steve Fein of Oregon took first in 24:06.  Matt Lane, another New Englander, now a senior at William & Mary, placed second in 24:08.

Colorado University took second in the meet, 126 to 140.  Colorado has built a top-notch XC program in just two years by recruiting the Torres brothers (big-time Foot Locker HS XC runners) and Steve Slattery of New Jersey (Steve tried to run with the New Englanders at Foot Locker indoors and got clobbered).

Iona tried to build a  program by recruiting every XC runner from Gloucester, Mass HS (Ricci Munns,  et al.).  Corey, a Junior,  placed 155th.

Massachusetts' most recent burner, Andy Powell of eastern Mass' Oliver Ames, placed 185th, as a displacer, but non-scorer for Stanford.  Andy ran 26:30. Welcome to the big time, Andy.
