| 1998 CMS 5K Series Race #6 |
Worcester, MA - February 7, 1998
Jerry Learned and Nicole "I should have known better" McGilpin pulled away from the rest of the field from the very start of the race. For them, that was the good news. The bad news is that Jerry became the first runner in the 300+ race history of the CMS 52-Week Series held in Worcester to miss the first turn. In the process, Nicole followed him.
Fortunately, the turn comes early in the race - @3/8 mile - and several trailing runners yelled at them to turn around. Jerry ran an extra 300 yards or so and Nicole about an extra 200. Except for slower times, it didn't make a difference as they came back to easily finish 1-2.
"Actually, it was great," said Nicole, who was using the race as a final tune-up for a half-marathon that she is planning to run in California next weekend. "Having to chase the runners that got by me made me run a little harder than I might have otherwise."
The volunteers: Peter Cotter (Jefferson); Dolores Drewniak (Princeton); Jan McNamara (Princeton).
