CMS 5K Series Race #34 |
A trio of CMS juniors - Matt DePari of Worcester, Andy Gallivan of Worcester and Mike Smith of Princeton - overhauled early leader Brad Fors of Leominster at the two-mile mark and then waged a fierce battle to the finish. With 20 yards to go, Matt unleashed a final kick and edged Andy by two seconds. Mike finished another seven seconds behind Andy. Brad, a perennial top five finisher in Worcester County races, settled for fourth.
While Andy didn't win the race, he was one of two runners who won pairs of Reebok running shoes in a post-race random draw/pizza party. Ironically, Andy was asked to make the first drawing. He selected Ed Sato's number. In turn, Ed then was asked to make the second draw and he selected Andy. Race officials are debating as to whether an Independent Counsel should be called in to investigate the drawing.
This was the final CMS 52-Week 5K Series race to be held at Orchard Hills Athletic Club in Lancaster this year. The series shifts to Assumption College in Worcester for five Wednesday evening cross country races in September.
