1998 CMS 5K Series Race #3

Worcester, MA - January 17, 1998

Two runners - Bob Willis of Longmeadow, MA and long-time CMS member Nicole McGilpin (Westfield) -Where is that turn??? journeyed some 50 miles east to run CMS 52-Week 5K Series Race #3. With less than a half-mile to go, Willis, who had built a substantial lead on the rest of the field, missed a snow obliterated turn marker and ended up running an extra mile. Ultimately, he had to settle for 12th place.

Meanwhile, Nicole, who was in second at the time, missed a different snow obscured turn and ran an extra half-mile or thereabouts. She still ended up second as John Carey (Oxford) managed to stay the correct course and claim the victory.

Both were quite philosophical about the errant turns. Willis was heard to comment, "At least it didn't happen in a marathon."
