The sea of blue... blue labels that is. The men's 20-39 division,
whose labels are color-coded blue, took the first 5 spots of this week's
race.

For a midsummer's night, the weather was most acommodating to the runners who toed the starting line at this week's race. Just as the race looked like it might be a carbon copy of last week's duel to the death between CMS'ers Brad Fors and Andy McCarron, who parts the two speedsters like a log splitter? None other than another CMS'er, Dan "Mr. Trifecta" Navaroli. You'll recall Mr. Trifecta last carved his way into CMS's record books by winning 3 different terrain races (trail, road, track) within less than a 6 hour time frame in various parts of Fitchburg. This week Dan decided to continue his extraordinary feats by shaving off over a minute of his previously fastest 5k time. |
|
Andy McCarron though, refused to relinquish the top dog trophy he
won the previous week. Andy ran a fine 16:39, Dan a PR of 16:45, and
Brad a smooth 16:50. Not too bad a job for a midsummer's race!

Christina Chatalian of Leominster not only captured the women's title this week with a time of 25:46, but she also was able to win herself one of those cool CMS water bottles from the weekly random draw. The first CMS woman to break the tape this week was Kathleen Power of Oxford in a time of 26:25. First female master was CMS'er Evelyn Dolan of Bolton in a time of 26:41. First female senior award went to Orchard Hills' own Diane Mitchell of Fitchburg in a time of 26:50. Rounding out the women's awards list was Grafton CMS'er Hilary Clifford who was the first junior overall by running a time of 29:28. In the men's divisions: Kevin McCusker of Ashby ran 18:03 for first
master, Mark Wigler of Hubbardston ran 19:02 for first senior, and Peter
Orni of Ashburnham ran 21:14 for first veteran (yet again!).

As most are probably now wondering, Mike Weinberg of Rutland was the men's winner in the weekly random draw. Like Christina, Mike opted for one of the cool CMS water bottles. |
|
|
On a side note, after roughly a 10 year hiatus from running and from the Striders, this year Mike got back into the running groove and also rejoined the CMS family in the winter months at Worcester State. His 5k times were in the mid 20's at that point, but with a true runner's heart, Mike started chiseling at his 5k times and when the annual CMS Members Race rolled around a few weeks ago Mike went on to run a 20:03! As if that wasn't impressive enough, this week Mike went on to record a personal best of 19:34. |
|
|
I'm not sure if Mike had any faster times back in the good ol' days of CMS, but shedding those minutes like a snake sheds his skin is definitely an inspiration. Way to go Mike! |
